A practical way to hear it
Judge a preset by three tests: does its role become clear quickly, does one control change it predictably, and can it survive a different pattern or key without falling apart? A preset that passes is useful even if it is not immediately perfect for the track.
The purpose of this exercise is not to reach a prescribed setting. It is to make the relationship audible enough that the producer can choose deliberately.
