The principles behind the decision

A practical way to hear it
Choose a pattern, then exaggerate velocity differences until the hierarchy is obvious. Reduce the contrast until the groove feels intentional rather than mechanical. Finally, shorten the kick and listen for the point where motion becomes clearer.
The purpose of this exercise is not to reach a prescribed setting. It is to make the relationship audible enough that the producer can choose deliberately.
