Saturation Lab

Drive soft, hard, tape-like and tube-like curves while the waveform and spectrum expose peak shaping and harmonic growth.

Controlled experiment

Change one cause. Hear the result.

Before moving a control, predict what will change. Use the play controls to compare at a comfortable level.

Audio starts only when you press a play button.

6 dB
Level entering the nonlinear curve.
The transfer shape applied to the signal.
100%
Blend between dry and shaped signals.
-4 dB
Gain after processing.
What changed

Move one control and listen for the relationship.

Transfer resultUpdates with the controls
Transfer result is ready. Move a control to inspect the change.
Harmonic spectrumUpdates with the controls
Harmonic spectrum is ready. Move a control to inspect the change.

Attention guide

Listen for these three things.

  • 1Upper harmonics on smaller speakers
  • 2Flattening of the tallest peaks
  • 3Loss of sub definition at high drive

Guided practice

Three experiments worth doing.

Do them in order. Reveal “What to notice” only after you have described the result in your own words.

  1. 01

    Audibility without EQ

Raise Drive until the kick becomes clearer on a quiet playback level, then level-match Output.

    What to notice

Harmonics can imply low pitch on systems that cannot reproduce the fundamental.

  2. 02

    Shape matters

Compare Soft and Hard at 12 dB Drive.

    What to notice

Harder corners create stronger high-order harmonics and more obvious edge.

  3. 03

    Parallel restraint

Set Drive high and reduce Mix toward 25%.

    What to notice

Parallel blending can add edge while preserving more of the original contour.

Check your model

Why can saturation help a deep kick translate to small speakers?

Choose the answer that explains the cause, not merely the symptom.

Close the loop

Can you explain the result without the controls?

If you can name the cause, the audible change and the musical tradeoff, the concept is ready to transfer into your own session.
