Polarity

Polarity is binary: normal or inverted. It can improve a pair of microphones or layers when their overall pressure directions oppose, but it cannot align arbitrary delays.

Timing

Moving one waveform changes arrival and the phase relationship of every frequency by a different amount. Small offsets can strengthen one band while weakening another.

Practical phase decisions
