KICK PROGRAMMING
What the larger MkII library changes
A larger internal library provides more starting envelopes, attack profiles and acoustic or electronic identities. It does not remove the need to edit the source for the arrangement. On either machine, a useful kick workflow is:
- Select the source whose attack and body are closest to the required role.
- Adjust pitch while listening to both the low fundamental and upper knock.
- Shorten decay before reaching for EQ if the kick is masking the bass in time.
- Program dynamics and microtiming before heavy compression.
- Use an individual output only when the external process has a defined purpose.
POLYPHONY NOTE
Why the published voice counts need care
Roland's support specifications list a maximum of 32 voices for the R-8 and 12 voices for the R-8 MkII. That is counterintuitive if the MkII is assumed to improve every numerical specification. Treat the figures as published limits, then verify real-world voice allocation with the manual and the specific pattern, instrument and output configuration. The MkII's documented expansion is clearest in library size and memory.

- Whether an external processor improves the kick after loudness is matched.
