Yes. Excessive Sub raises the average low frequency energy and reduces the contrast that makes the onset feel strong. Once the comparison is level matched, the version with more Sub can feel softer even though it contains more low frequency energy.

The excessive Sub condition carries more sustained low energy, but the onset occupies less of the available level. The balanced version is easier to locate and can feel punchier at the same measured RMS.
Reduce Sub before reducing the whole kick. Preserve Body for physical centre, shorten Length if the low tail is the real problem, and compare with the bass playing.
