Each case is a transparent composite scenario built to teach a diagnostic method. It is not presented as a named artist session or client result. The useful part is the sequence of tests—and knowing what evidence would make the conclusion wrong.

Problem diagnosis
A powerful solo kick feels weak in the chorus
Context: a dense electronic chorus with a sustained bass, bright synth stabs and a kick whose solo waveform and peak level already appear large.
Immediate answer
The kick does not need more sub. Its arrival is being covered while its long low tail consumes headroom. Shortening the tail and protecting a small region of upper-body definition is a better first move than boosting the whole kick.
Hypotheses
Masking at the onset; excess tail limiting available level; master-bus gain reduction triggered by the combined low end.
Controlled checks
Mute bass; bypass the master limiter; high-pass the monitoring path temporarily; reduce the kick tail without changing peak level.
Selected move
Shorten low decay until the groove opens, then restore only enough 1–3 kHz definition for the arrival to remain readable.
Rejected move
A broad 60 Hz boost makes the solo larger but drives more bus reduction and does not restore the covered onset.
Listen for
More rhythmic certainty at quiet level, less limiter movement and no new cardboard quality when the chorus becomes loud.
Transfer boundary
If muting bass does not restore the kick, investigate competing midrange transients, polarity or source envelope before using this fix.

Relationship diagnosis
Kick and bass are clean alone, muddy together
Context: both sources have useful tone independently, but their longest notes and kick tails overlap on the downbeat.
Immediate answer
This is an occupancy problem before it is an EQ problem. Decide which source owns sustained sub on the collision, then create a brief time-domain handoff.
Hypotheses
Similar fundamental range; maximum envelopes arriving together; a bass release that extends beneath the following kick.
Controlled checks
Shorten only the bass note before the kick; move it one small rhythmic division; audition a temporary 80 ms duck without makeup gain.
Selected move
Keep the bass timbre, shorten the note entering the downbeat and add shallow onset-triggered ducking only where the pattern still overlaps.
Rejected move
Permanent complementary notches thin both parts during the many moments when they are not competing.
Listen for
A single stable low-frequency contour, bass returning smoothly after the kick and no obvious “hole” or pumping gesture.
Transfer boundary
If the arrangement depends on audible pumping, a deeper rhythmic duck may be an aesthetic choice rather than a repair.

Translation diagnosis
The kick disappears on small speakers
Context: the kick has deep weight on full-range monitoring but almost no rhythmic identity through a phone or small mono speaker.
Immediate answer
Preserve the sub, but give the kick a second identity above it. Use source-derived upper body, a controlled transient or gentle harmonic generation—not an unrelated loud click.
Hypotheses
Most energy is below the playback system’s useful range; transient is too dark; bass carries the same low rhythm and hides the kick’s timing.
Controlled checks
High-pass the full mix near the upper bass only for diagnosis; solo the first 30 ms; audition low-level saturation with matched output.
Selected move
Blend a short band-limited onset derived from the same kick and add subtle saturation before output compensation.
Rejected move
A large treble shelf raises hiss and makes the full-range version clicky without creating a coherent body.
Listen for
The rhythm remains identifiable when sub is removed, while the full-range playback still feels like one kick rather than two layers.
Transfer boundary
If the production intentionally hides the kick on small playback, translation is an aesthetic constraint, not an automatic defect.

Dynamics diagnosis
A compressed kick is louder but less punchy
Context: a fast compressor shows substantial gain reduction; makeup gain makes bypass seem smaller, yet the kick no longer leads the groove.
Immediate answer
The comparison is biased and the attack is being reduced. First match loudness. Then lengthen attack or reduce gain reduction until the arrival survives; if only exceptional peaks need control, use a different tool.
Hypotheses
Fast attack catches the useful onset; slow release holds into the next hit; makeup gain creates a false preference.
Controlled checks
Remove makeup gain; set ratio low; sweep attack while looping the full pattern; watch whether reduction returns to zero before the next kick.
Selected move
Use less reduction with enough attack to pass the onset and a release that recovers musically; automate isolated outlier peaks separately.
Rejected move
Additional transient shaping after heavy compression creates an artificial click while the body remains flattened.
Listen for
Clear arrival without a detached click, stable body and no whole-mix swell after each hit.
Transfer boundary
If a flattened, forward envelope is the intended style, loss of natural punch may be the design rather than a failure.

Layer diagnosis
A second kick layer makes the low end smaller
Context: a body layer adds apparent size in solo but the combined kick loses low-frequency stability, especially in mono.
Immediate answer
The layers overlap without distinct jobs. Return to one anchor, add only the missing band or time region, then compare polarity, offset and envelope length independently.
Hypotheses
Low-frequency cancellation; separate transient arrivals; slightly different pitch decays producing moving reinforcement and cancellation.
Controlled checks
High-pass the added layer; invert polarity; move it by samples in both directions; shorten it to onset-only; collapse monitoring to mono.
Selected move
Keep the original as body/sub anchor and retain only the second layer’s brief upper onset, aligned by the audible start.
Rejected move
Choosing the largest combined waveform peak does not guarantee stable tone across the pitch sweep or the full pattern.
Listen for
One coherent hit, consistent body on every repetition, no flam and minimal change between stereo and mono.
Transfer boundary
If the moving cancellation is an intentional acoustic or chorus-like character, perfect stability may remove the desired motion.

Delivery diagnosis
The kick changes after export
Context: the project playback feels controlled, but the rendered or encoded version has a softer onset, extra crackle or different low-end movement.
Immediate answer
Separate rendering, sample-rate conversion, codec playback and loudness-normalised comparison. Re-import a lossless export, align it, level-match it and test the exact master path before blaming the kick source.
Hypotheses
Different limiter or oversampling state during render; intersample peaks; codec pre-echo around the transient; playback normalisation; unaligned comparison.
Controlled checks
Export lossless at the session rate; re-import with all warping off; null or difference-test aligned files; then create the delivery encode from that render.
Selected move
Make the offline and real-time master paths identical, preserve sensible true-peak margin and judge encoded versions at matched loudness.
Rejected move
Brightening the kick to “survive export” can exaggerate the source while leaving the actual render mismatch untouched.
Listen for
Equivalent onset and limiter recovery in the re-imported lossless file, with codec changes treated as delivery constraints rather than mix mysteries.
Transfer boundary
If the lossless re-import already differs, fix the render path first; codec-specific remedies are premature.
Evidence label
These are authored teaching cases, not disguised testimonials or claims about specific commercial records.
Repeatability
Every conclusion follows from a check the reader can perform with ordinary DAW tools.
Falsifiability
Each case includes a transfer boundary: evidence that should send the diagnosis in another direction.
