What this number does not mean
The suggested range is not a command to trim the whole audio file at that millisecond. It describes where the dominant low-frequency body should be settling. A quieter click, texture or upper tail may continue without occupying the bass’s main low-frequency role.
Why kick length is an arrangement decision
Kick length is often discussed as if a genre owns one correct millisecond value. In practice, the important question is when the next meaningful low-frequency event begins. A four-on-the-floor kick under a bass note that starts at the same instant has a different problem from a kick followed by a sixteenth-note bass pickup.
The calculator converts tempo and subdivision into an exact interval, then turns that interval into an audition range. The range is intentionally conservative because sample envelopes, room decay, distortion and compression can extend perceived low-frequency duration beyond the visible waveform.
What to listen for
- The bass note starts clearly rather than emerging from the kick tail.
- The kick remains substantial without filling every low-end gap.
- The groove improves when the kick becomes shorter; it should not merely become quieter.
- The decision survives mono and low-level listening.

How long should a kick be at 128 BPM?
Tempo alone is not enough. At 128 BPM a quarter note is 468.75 ms and a sixteenth note is about 117.19 ms, but the useful kick length depends on the next bass event and which sound owns sustained sub.
Should the entire kick end before the next bass note?
Not necessarily. The dominant low-frequency body should create a clear handoff, while a quieter upper-frequency tail can sometimes continue without causing low-end masking.
Does a shorter kick always sound punchier?
No. Shortening can increase contrast, but an over-shortened kick can lose body. Compare the change at matched loudness with the full bass pattern playing.
