Kick Phase, Polarity and Timing
Phase, polarity and timing are related but not interchangeable. Polarity flips the waveform, timing moves an event, and phase describes the relative position of periodic components.

When two kick layers or a kick and bass overlap, small timing changes can either reinforce or reduce particular frequencies. Do not move a layer until the waveform looks attractive in isolation; adjust while listening to the combined result and preserve the musical timing of the transient.
