TR-606 vs TR-707 vs TR-808 vs TR-909 Kick Drums
The TR-606 kick is a compact analog pulse with minimal onboard shaping. The TR-707 supplies fixed PCM bass-drum choices with an acoustic-derived profile. The TR-808 offers a tunable, decay-controlled analog kick known for rounded low-frequency sustain. The hybrid TR-909 uses an analog bass drum with Tune, Decay and Attack controls, giving it a firmer and more adjustable front edge. None is automatically better. Their different envelopes solve different arrangement problems.

Start with the space available between low-frequency events. Then decide how much attack, body and tail the kick must provide. A famous machine name cannot answer those questions for the current track.
TR-606
Compact analog support
The 606 gives the producer little direct kick shaping on the front panel. Its creative strength is the relationship between a concise bass drum, accent pattern and the rest of the analog kit. In a dense arrangement, that restraint can be an advantage. If more body is needed, use external processing or a deliberately separate low layer rather than expecting a decay control that the machine does not provide.
TR-707
Fixed PCM definition
The 707 replaces the continuously generated analog kick with recorded digital drum material. Its two bass-drum choices and individual outputs make selection and routing more important than synthesis. The result is useful when the mix needs a stable, recognisable thump whose envelope is not being redesigned at the source.
TR-808
Low-frequency duration as composition
The 808 makes Tone and Decay central decisions. A short setting can behave like a rounded kick. A longer decay turns the voice into a pitched low-frequency event that can overlap bass notes and even carry a bass role. Tuning, note spacing and tail length therefore matter as much as nominal level.
TR-909
Attack and body under direct control
The 909 adds Tune, Decay and Attack to its analog bass drum. That creates a broader range between compact punch and extended club weight. The Attack control can clarify the front edge, but too much can disconnect the click from the body or make the kick brittle after further processing.

- How quickly does the kick reach its main impact?
- Does the low body read as a short thump, a rounded note or a sustained bass event?
- How much can the original hardware reshape the voice before external processing?
- Does the kick remain clear beside the bass at matched loudness?
- Does the pattern accent system change the groove more effectively than changing the sound itself?

Avoid false certainty
- Assuming every sample labelled 606, 707, 808 or 909 is an unprocessed factory sound.
- Comparing examples at different loudness levels.
- Calling the entire TR-909 analog when its architecture is hybrid.
- Expecting the 606 or 707 to provide the same onboard kick editing as the 808 or 909.
- Choosing the longest kick when the bass already occupies that time and frequency range.
