How to Tune an Acoustic Kick Drum
Seat the heads, bring each lug to even low tension in opposing pairs, clear the pitch around the edge, then set the batter–resonant relationship for the required feel and sustain. Tune for an even, useful range rather than forcing every acoustic kick to one song note.

The mechanism behind the sound
Uneven tension produces inconsistent modes and a muddy or unstable tone. The relative tension of the two heads changes volume, sustain, pitch movement and rebound.
STEP 1
Establish even low tension
Seat the head and bring each rod to finger tightness. Increase tension gradually in opposing pairs. Remove wrinkles without immediately chasing the lowest possible pitch.
STEP 2
Clear the head around the lugs
Tap near each tension rod at a consistent distance from the hoop. Correct the largest differences with small movements. The purpose is a stable, even mode, not a laboratory-perfect reading.
STEP 3
Set feel, tone and sustain together
Use the batter head to establish pedal response and onset, then adjust the resonant head while listening from the front. Record small steps. Add damping only after the drum sustains evenly.

Do not force every kick to the song root
An acoustic kick may have several moving and overlapping modes rather than one stable note. Tune a clearly tonal decay to avoid clashes, but choose a stable useful range and musical relationship rather than one universal tuner target.

- Finger-tighten the rods, then increase tension in opposing pairs.
