An acoustic kick is one interacting system: shell dimensions, batter and resonant heads, tuning, beater, damping, pedal technique, microphone position, room and performance all change the captured result. Start at the instrument, then choose microphones and processing for the sound that already exists.
WHY IT WORKS
The mechanism behind the sound
The head excites the enclosed air and shell, the resonant head shapes sustain and tone, the beater defines part of the onset, and each microphone hears a different balance of those events. Processing cannot fully undo a source that was prepared for the wrong role.

SOURCE-FIRST DIAGNOSIS
Fix the earliest cause
- Performance: check consistency, beater control and unwanted double contact.
- Hardware: remove rattles, pedal noise and loose fittings.
- Heads: inspect condition, seating and even lug tension.
- Preparation: tune and damp for the arrangement.
- Room: listen in front of the drum and around the space.
- Microphone: move it before reaching for broad corrective EQ.
- Processing: use only what the prepared recording still needs.
HEAD RELATIONSHIP
Batter and resonant tuning work together
Clear each head to even tension first. Similar head tensions can encourage a longer, more unified resonance; changing their relationship alters sustain, projection, pitch movement and pedal response. Record small changes from the audience side because the player and listener hear different balances.
PEDAL TECHNIQUE
The beater can excite or damp the head
Holding the beater against the batter head adds damping immediately after impact and tends to shorten the note. Letting it rebound leaves the membrane freer to sustain. Neither technique is universally correct: compare them at similar force and choose the response that fits the groove, drum preparation and player.
STYLE DIRECTIONS
Prepare for a role, not a stereotype
Open acoustic and jazz direction
Begin with even tuning, useful front-head resonance, restrained damping and a kit-centred microphone picture. Add close-mic level only for the definition or weight the broader kit image lacks.
Dense rock and metal direction
Control the decay, create deliberate beater definition and use close placement for separation. Preserve enough body to connect the attack to a real drum; add a sample only for a clearly missing function.
