The batter head receives the beater and strongly affects attack, feel and durability. The resonant front head responds through the air inside the shell and shapes tone, sustain and projection. Ply count, thickness, coating and built-in damping change both heads' behaviour.

The mechanism behind the sound
The struck head compresses the air inside the drum, which drives the opposite head. Their tension, mass and damping determine how energy is exchanged and how long different modes continue.

The batter head receives the beater, so its tension, mass, ply structure, coating and damping strongly affect contact sound, rebound and durability. A thicker or multi-ply head may control overtones and tolerate harder playing, but construction alone does not dictate pitch or depth.
RESONANT HEAD
The front head completes the acoustic system
Air displaced by the batter head drives the resonant head. Its tuning and damping influence sustain, projection and what listeners hear from the front of the drum. A front head is therefore an active sound-producing element, not merely a cover.
